March 2010
“Be aware of wonder. Live a balanced life-learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.”
Robert Fulghm
The Vernal Equinox when night and day, light and dark are in perfect balance falls on 20th March and is nature’s reminder of the importance of balance in our lives.
We all know the importance of balance; work and play, activity and rest, giving and receiving, caring for others and caring for ourselves but finding that delicate balance in our busy lives can be a challenge. So often we are out of balance and don’t even know it.
Finding Your Balance is our theme this month at Tulip Yoga Studio. Take some time to reflect on your life and your yoga practice and see where you are maybe tipping a little to one side. Spend time on your mat in Tadasana (mountain pose) and notice how you’re body is constantly making micro-adjustments so that you can stay in balance while the earth is spinning around. Take these lessons off the mat and see where you can make small adjustments to help bring all aspects of your life into better balance and alignment.
Practicing yoga is a powerful way to help us keep equilibrium in our lives but to truly benefit us our practice should not always be just giving us more of what we’ve already got. So often we are drawn to a style of practice that is comfortable and tips the scales of our lives further from centre. The ‘type-A’s’ are flocking to hot, kick-your-asana classes while the restorative classes are filling up with laid back, ‘who am I to blow against the wind?’ folks. In order to bring ourselves back closer to centre it is important to move towards the opposite of what we are drawn to sometimes. It doesn’t mean giving up the classes you love but simply mixing it up and seeing how you feel moving out of your comfort zone and pushing yourself a bit.
Are you a super-charged, high energy person who loves a strong, sweaty dynamic class? This month give yourself a break and try Yin, Viniyoga or Yoga Nidra for a change of pace.
Do you tend to lack energy and love a practice where you can take it slow and just chill out? Boost your energy with a challenging Vinyasa Flow, Ashtanga or Groove Flow class and see the difference it makes.

“The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
